A single-component, low temperature and rapid curing type elastic adhesive that realizes ‘environmental friendliness’ and ‘rapid curing’

Recently, various materials are used for parts to reduce costs and tact time at manufacturing sites. There is a growing needs for products and processes that are suitable for such materials. There is also a need for product development in consideration of environmental aspects such as reducing CO2 emissions.

At ThreeBond, in order to respond to such needs of the market, we have used a polymer denatured from ‘castor oil,’ which is of vegetable origin, as a major component to develop a ‘single component, low temperature and rapid curing type elastic adhesive (ThreeBond1539)’ that is capable of unprecedented rapid curing at low temperatures.

“We have reduced the problematic curing time to achieve both low heating temperature and short curing time starting at 60°C  and 1 minute.”

Single component, moisture-curable elastic adhesives that can adhere to a wide range of adherends are used in many markets and applications. While these adhesives are convenient to use, they have a long curing time.
We therefore shortened the curing time, which had been an issue, making possible a low heating temperature and short curing time as low as 60℃ and 1 minute respectively.

Also, ThreeBond1539 uses environmentally friendly materials, with biomass resource ‘castor oil’ as its raw material.

Realizing rapid curing at low temperatures

Generally, single component, moisture-curable elastic adhesives are not suitable for adhering large surface areas and for potting because they require a long curing time and their curability depends on the humidity of the atmosphere. In order to cure them in a short time, they would have to be a two-component type or be heated at high temperatures of 100℃ or more, which makes handling in production sites problematic.
In order to overcome these issues, ThreeBond1539 incorporates a heat-activated latent curing agent that becomes active at relatively low temperature of 60℃ to realize a low temperature and short time curing starting at 60℃ and 1 minute (Fig. 1).
Because it becomes a rubber-like elastic body after curing, it can be used for adhering and sealing components that require alleviation of stresses, such as impacts, vibrations, expansion, and contraction.

At production lines, the adhesive enables shorter tact time of processes and lower use of energy than in the past, leading to reduction of production costs.

Environmentally friendly, with biomass resource castor oil as its raw material

While from year to year attention is focusing increasingly on the problem of industrial waste disposal of plastic products, biomass resources are gaining attention in that they are sustainably reproducible resources for as long as sunlight, water, and plant life last.
ThreeBond1539 was developed with the focus on ‘castor oil,’ which is one type of biomass resource, can be produced by a comparatively easy method, and is readily available. Since castor oil contains ricinoleic acid as a major component and has properties such as flexibility,

low temperature characteristics, stability, electrical characteristics, and biological inactivity, it is a useful raw material as a major component for adhesives as well as being an environmentally friendly raw material.

“Developing products that are environmentally friendly by reducing CO2 emissions, etc. is beneficial to both manufacturers and users of adhesives, and I expect such demand to increase in the future.” (Watanabe)

ThreeBond1539 can be used in a wide variety of fields and applications regardless of market since it exhibits favorable adhesive strength with regard to all types of metals and plastics (Fig. 3) and has good resistance to heat, water, and moisture.
